Chapter 4: ESL vs EFL

Today, I learned Seminar in English Language Teaching course in the morning. In the early, teacher taught us about ESL and EFL and assigned us to discuss about the different between English in ESL and EFL learning context. My friends and I spent much time to discuss about it. So, we found that ESL is quite different from EFL in learning context in many aspects. First, Students in ESL context can find real life communication from outside classroom, but EFL students have limited sources of real life communication. Second, students have extensive daily exposure to English-speaking culture, In the other hand, EFL students have limited exposure to English-speaking culture. Next, mixed nationalities, students in ESL context don't share their native language or a common culture, but students in EFL context can be able to share the same language and culture. The last aspect is teacher, ESL teacher is required to adopt a methodology on each teaching and learning context, but EFL teacher focus on classroom activity.

Then, we presented our result to the class. After presentation, teacher had a lecture about 21st Century Learning Pedagogical Perspectives in 5 topics;
1. Why 21st is vital?
2. 21st Century key subject
3. 21st Century Themes
4. 21st Century Skills
5. Factors affecting Thai students' 21st century Learning.

After lecture, teacher assigned us to do a group project which is about English Teaching. My group got the topic that "Developing Thai Students' Critical Thinking Skills"
So, my group had 1 month to do this project and then, my group has to present our project to the class.

Chapter 3: Global English

Before class, I felt very stress and nervous because I'm a a representative of my group to present Global English, EIL, ESL, EFL, the differences between EFL & ESL and Role of English in Thailand that teacher assigned us last week to discuss about.

So, in the early of class, teacher asked a representative from each group to present the result of discussion. While I was presenting, I felt more relax because I always remind myself that this is a chance to improve my speaking skill because my speaking skill is not good, comparing with my others skills, and I'm also going to be a trainee teacher next semester. After presentation, I felt so free, but all of my friends were quite, and I don't know why.

After all presentation finished, teacher told us to watch a video of "World Englishes" by David Crystal. He talks about why English become World Englishes and wherever that English spreaded to a variety of regions in the world. English had been adapted their own and also reflected the local culture, custom and history from English speakers in that country. So, These are why there are many different English accents in many countries.

"World Englishes" by David Crystal

After that, teacher summarized the lesson by using a power point in 4 topics: 1. The role of English
2. Status of English
3. The spread of English
4. Varieties of English

Then, I realized that Thais should not be worry about English anymore because this is English in Thai style or Tnglish.

Chapter 2: Lingua Franca of The World

Before class, I read articles about World Englishes, The end of CLT and Teaching World Englishes. I though that searching for the article is harder than reading it because I spent more time to search the article. At the beginning of the class, teacher assigned us to discuss in a group of 6-7 students in the topic of Global English, English as an International Language, English as a Second Language, English as a Foreign Language, Lingua Franca and Role of English in Thailand. While my friends and I were discussing by using a various of articles from different sources, I realized that the concept of World English, World Englishes and Global Englishs are quite different. World English refers to the English Language as a lingual franca that is  used in business, trade, diplomacy and other spheres of global activity, while World Englishes refers to the different varieties of English in different regions of the world. The team Global Englishes has been used by scholars in  the field to emphasis the more recent spread of English due to globalization. After discussion, teacher assigned us to present the result of the discussion by sending the head of the group or secretary of the group to be the representative. While group 1 was presenting, teacher had an urgent meeting of the university and gave us a sheet of Teaching English as an International Language and assigned us to read it.

Chapter 1: First Impression

Yesterday was the first class of me and Dr.Usa after A Discourse Approach in Reading subject in semester 2/2557. I was very glad and proud to study with her again because she is a dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Nakhonpathom Rajabhat University. Before class, I though that this class is about how to create and organize English seminar, but this subject is about searching the information about English language pedagogy and preparing students to perceive up to date the information about teaching. At the beginning of the class, teacher greeted students and asked us to think of subjects about English teaching that we've learnt already; English Teaching Methodology I,  Cultures of Speakers of English, Learning English though Projects and English Language Assessment and Evaluation. After that, the teacher assigned us to think about what we got from each subjects though group discussion of 9 people per group. I got number 2, Cultures of Speakers of English. Then, present a result of group discussion in front of the class to let teacher know about our background knowledge to prepare and set topic to survey in the future class. After that, the teacher explain a course syllabus of this subject. After I known what will I meet in this semester, I felt little worry about my skill to search and read research, journey and article in this subject. But, I think that I am going to be a teacher in the several months, This is not time to fear nothing, just Fighting! When I felt exhausted I always remind myself that "Hard Word Never Kill Anyone"
